Frequently asked Questions

What means CITES-recognized?

CITES is a global agreement protecting endangered species. Being recognized means we meet strict international standards for animal care and conservation.

Where is Cheetah's Rock? From where is free transportation included?

We are located on Zanzibar’s west coast, north of Stone Town.

We offer free roundtrip transportation from most locations including e.g. Stone Town, Nungwi, Kiwengwa, Kendwa, Matemwe, Uroa & more.
For a surcharge of $20 per car (not per person) we offer round-trip transport from/to locations further away from us, like the Southeast Coast.

Why is booking in advance necessary?

We limit the number of visitors to provide a personalised, close encounter with the Rescued Wild Animals in our care. This means bookings need to be done as soon as possible before the limited spaces are taken.

I’ve already been on safari – is it still worth visiting Cheetah’s Rock?

Yes – because this is something entirely different.

While safaris are about watching animals from a distance, Cheetah’s Rock brings you up close.

You’ll meet rescued wildlife in a setting where real connection is possible – eye to eye, heart to heart and guided by experts who are happy to share real insight, not just names and numbers.

Many guests tell us: “This was even better than my safari.” We’ll let You be the judge of that – but one thing is certain: every visit supports our work and helps us continue caring for the animals that need it most.

Is it ethical to meet animals so close and to take pictures with them?

Yes – when it’s done with respect and purpose.
At Cheetah’s Rock, these moments are part of carefully guided enrichment – for the animals and for you.
Every encounter is voluntary, calm, and based on trust.
We believe it’s powerful to carry memories – in your heart or on your camera – when they lead to awareness and protection.
Because where education meets fun, and fun meets conservation, cherished moments become lasting impact.

Can I take and share pictures from my visit free of charge?

Absolutely – and we’re happy to help you capture the moment! You’re welcome to take photos and share them freely on social media.
We don’t charge anything for that – in fact, we love it when our mission is shared with the world. Feel free to tag us and spread the word!

How is it possible that we can meet the animals so close?

Because they want to meet You. All Animals are handled by applying 100% positive reinforcement methods, through trust and reward only. Our experienced animal behaviourists will show you this practice during your visit.

When do you release animals back into the wild – and when not?

We only release animals when it’s legal, safe, and truly right – for the individual and the species. Releasing an animal just to improve our image would be irresponsible. If freedom means suffering or death, we don’t call it rescue. Every life in our care deserves more than a symbolic gesture – it deserves a real chance.

Is there a guarantee to touch all animals?

You will meet a wide variety of wildlife on our Tours. The animals see us as an enrichment to their daily lives and enjoy being around us.
However, we can’t promise you to get close to all animals all the time. They have their free will and each encounter is always up to their terms.

Where do your animals come from?

The wild Animals in our care are either Rescues or have been gifted to us by legal conservation centers. There is a story behind each of them, which we will let you know on the Tour. We work tirelessly to provide them with the best health care, freedom & happiness they truly deserve.

What if animals get sick or old?

We stay. We care. We fight – with everything we have.
Together with outstanding wildlife vets, we support every animal through age, illness, and recovery in the name of Animal Welfare.

What happens to the animals once they become too big or dangerous?

If the animals in our care becomes too large or dangerous we simply have to accept our human limits and decrease the level of interaction.
We give our rescued wild animals a safe and loving lifetime home.

Why are the tours conducted in English?

Because we welcome animal lovers from all over the world – and English is the language most guests have in common.

Our team is a blend of local and international professionals, so English helps us make sure everyone feels included and well cared for during the tour.

But don’t worry – the animals you’ll meet don’t speak English either.

Let us know your wishes, and we’ll do our best to make your special day truly wild – in the best possible way.

Why is there an age limit of 15+ for your tours?

Our tours are shaped by the animals – not by schedules or expectations. They respond not only to sound, but to energy, movement, and body language. To protect their comfort and wellbeing, we’ve set a minimum age of 15. Even the most mature child may communicate excitement in ways that feel unpredictable to a wild animal.
We know this limit can be disappointing – especially for families with thoughtful children – but it’s part of our responsibility to keep every encounter safe, calm and respectful.

We’re traveling as a family with younger children – what can we do?

Simple: one of you escapes to the animals for some magical hours of peace and wonder… while the other earns a parenting medal. Then you swap.
The animals stay calm, the kids stay happy – and both grown-ups get a break that feels slightly too good to be legal. Fair, fun, and surprisingly popular among tired parents.

Why do I need to follow the dress code?

Because the animals don’t see fashion – they see signals. Long, flowing garments can startle herbivores or invite big cats to play tug-of-war.
And jewelry? Our primates are surprisingly human – they want what sparkles. Simple, fitted clothing helps keep everyone calm, safe, and focused on what really matters.

Why can’t I wear sunscreen or insect repellent during the tour?

Because some of the animals in our care like you a little too much.

After they might choose coming right up to your skin, they often groom themselves by licking. And while you might trust your sunscreen or repellent, we wouldn’t recommend serving it as a snack.

Close contact plays an important role in their emotional well-being – but their physical health matters just as much. By skipping those products for a few hours, you’re helping us keep things safe, natural, and just the way the animals prefer it.

Can I join the tour as a solo traveller?

That depends on the tour you’d like to book.
You’re more than welcome to join the Great Wildlife Tour on your own – it’s a group experience and a wonderful way to connect with fellow animal lovers.
The VIP Otter Experience is a little more exclusive.
Since only one booking group is hosted per day and your guides devote the entire time to just You, this tour requires a minimum of two spots booked. Feel free to bring a friend – or enjoy the full VIP treatment solo by reserving both spots.
The same applies to the Combined Tour, as it includes the VIP Otter Experience in the morning – and follows the Otter Tour rules.

Can guests with additional needs join the tour?

Yes – we welcome guests with different needs and ways of experiencing the world. Whether it’s mobility, sensory sensitivity, or something else, let us know in advance. We’ll do our best to support your visit and make it comfortable and meaningful. *

Some animal areas cannot be entered because immediate reaction to the instructions of our Animal Behaviourists is required.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Can I volunteer at Cheetah’s Rock?

No. Working with wild animals requires extensive experience, deep knowledge, and constant supervision.
At Cheetah’s Rock, only highly trained professionals care for the animals – because their wellbeing is our highest priority.

Why is the group size what it is? Can it be smaller?

Group size and ticket price go hand in hand. To keep the experience accessible while funding the care of the animals, we’ve designed a group size that strikes a careful balance.

That said, during the low season, groups are often naturally smaller – and if you’re looking for something even more personal, a VIP Great Wildlife Tour can be arranged on request.

We’re always happy to help you find the option that suits you best – and rest assured, even in a group, the experience remains personal, meaningful, and full of close-up moments.

Can I book Cheetah’s Rock exclusively for my family or a private occasion?

Yes – we love helping you create unforgettable moments!

Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, anniversary, or a company celebration, a VIP Tour tailored just for your group can be arranged on request.

The dress code and all animal-related rules still apply – after all, the stars of the day are also the most sensitive ones.

Let us know your wishes, and we’ll do our best to make your special day truly wild – in the best possible way.

How do I get the $30 discount?

To receive a $30 discount, enjoy participating in the Combined Tour.

What happens to the money from our visit – is it really for the animals?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: absolutely yes.
Every visit helps fund expert care, food, vet treatments, rescue efforts, local and international staff, security, maintenance, and the daily work that keeps the animals in our care safe and well. We have fur, feathers, scales – and bills.
So yes: if you’ve ever wondered where your money goes… you’re probably feeding a lemur right now.

Is it safe?

All the animals in our care have received their required vaccinations. Hence, you cannot get any diseases from them.
Our experienced animal behaviourists care for your safety, but there is no 100% guarantee when it comes to wild animals. Wild means wild. The animals in our care keep their instincts, claws and dignity – and they choose to meet you. But so far, every guest left the tour in one piece.

What if I am afraid to enter an area?

If you feel uncomfortable to enter, you are free to stay outside the enclosure.
You can still follow the information given and view the animal from outside.

Are drinks or food offered?

You will receive refreshments for free, however we do not offer any food. If you book the Combined Tour (VIP Otter Experience in the morning & Great Wildlife Tour in the afternoon) we will gladly organize lunch for you in a nearby hotel or restaurant. The cost of your lunch there is not included in our fee.)

Are there bathrooms?

Yes, there will be restrooms available on the tours.

When should I not book a tour?

We are a CITES recognized Rescue and Conservation Centre and respect the free spirit of all our Animals.
Hence, we kindly ask people to refrain from booking a tour if they are not willing to show respect towards Animals, other guests and our staff members.
